Flea: forty nine years old today. Unknown to many people, but Flea was closely acquainted with River Phoenix. On the evening of October, 30, 1993, Phoenix was to perform with Flea onstage at the Viper Room (which was owned by Johnny Depp at the time). During the evening Phoenix went to the bathroom to shoot up with various friends and dealers, and after consuming too much of the wrong combination of drugs, he collapsed outside the club during the early morning hours of Halloween. While Flea was onstage with Johnny Depp and his band P, Phoenix was outside the venue having seizures on the sidewalk. The news circulated through the club, and Flea left the stage and rushed outside and accompanied him in an ambulance to the hospital. Phoenix was pronounced dead at 1:51am October, 31, 1993.
